The Story of Tall Order! {And … Why I Self-Publish and So Should You!}

In 2004, I attended a seminar and Mark Victor Hansen, author of the mega-best-selling book series Chicken Soup for the Soul was speaking. I had the amazing great fortune and life-changing opportunity to spend about 30 minutes speaking one-on-one with Mark. At the time I was a business coach and speaker. Part of the magic of that time with him including him saying these words to me:

Everyone is a business coach and speaker. If you want to differentiate yourself, and have the ability to make more money, you must write a book.

While I had a successful career in network marketing, I didn’t necessarily consider myself qualified to write a book. In fact, the original version of this book {no, I’m not going to tell you anything else about it} was a very poor freshman effort. But shortly after it’s publication, I became friends with Jeffrey Gitomer and he said,

Your writing is good. This book looks awful.

{Loosely quoted …}. He encouraged me to put the finer touches on my book, like using a great graphic designer, having the book edited, and then get busy letting the world know it was available.

I had the option to publish with a big New York publisher, which is a post for another day. Because the offer grossly underwhelmed me, I chose the then not-so-popular {read: discouraged and highly disregarded} option of self-publishing. In fact, in 2005 and 2006, self-publishing was for losers. Or so I heard. But I decided to follow in the footsteps of Mark and Jeffrey, who both originally had self-published their works, and took control of my destiny.

Once the book “went to press” {i.e., had been uploaded to the printers}, I got busy pre-selling the book. In six weeks, I had sold the first 5,000 copies of the book on order, and placed two additional 5,000 book orders. By the time I took delivery of the first order {and filled up my garage!}, I had pre-sold over 11,000 copies … to clients, friends, colleagues, other business connections and a whole bunch of other promotion. And no, there was no Facebook, twitter, or even LinkedIn “back in the day.” I ended up making, within the first year, 12 times what the original book deal would have made me. Now, more than eight years after publication, my sweet little first book is still selling!

I share this with you for two reasons: {1} If you want to write a book, now is the time to begin. {2} You won’t get rich overnight, or even over the long term necessarily. But you CAN write a book, and you can make money from it. All through self-publishing!

I’ll share my formula for a successful book launch in an upcoming post, but this post is about why I so strongly advocate self-publishing. Here are my top 5 reasons:

  1. You control your destiny. You can set a goal and with the right plan, you can surpass it.

  2. You control the content. One thing that NY publisher wanted me to do was “add more pages.” I didn’t want to add more pages, the book said everything I wanted it to say and it was just perfect {IMHO}. You get to say how long, how many words, chapters, add-ins, etc.

  3. You control the distribution. There is now no reason your book can’t hit the shelves of your local bookstores, if that’s important to you. Your book can be sold in over 100 countries around the world when you utilize the opportunity to use Smashwords, iBooks, Amazon and Kobo.

  4. You can control your income. With the vast channels available for getting your ebook, paperback or hardback book into the hands, or onto the Kindles, iPads, Nooks, and other digital devices of your potential readers, you can {with the right marketing plan} create an additional or even sole stream of income from your writing!

  5. It’s never been easier to become a successful self-published author. Publishing your book, once it’s been written, edited and formatted, can take just a few short days {instead of years!} and be in the hands of your readers incredibly fast.

I haven’t written any books on self-publishing, but I’ve discovered a number of amazing books you can use as references … and you’ll find them HERE under “Publishing.”
