When’s Your Next Conference?

This week I’m at a writer’s conference. Getting prepared for it reminded me how beneficial it is to rub elbows with other people who do what I do. Specifically, how beneficial it is for you to rub elbows with other people who do what you do, too. (I mean, this email is all about you, right? Right!)

If it’s been awhile since you’ve attended a conference or association meeting, I understand. There are lots of things on all of our to do lists. But there’s something to be said from taking a break from work to refill your tank in ways you might not have recently considered. I think now is a great time to add at least one industry-specific event to your calendar.

Networking with other folks who are knowledgeable in your area of expertise can boost your business in really cool ways:

  1. Other professionals might be doing cool things you hadn’t thought of … when you implement their strategies, you can benefit, too. You can learn a lot from attendees and speakers alike.

  1. You might make new connections that come in handy when you have a client/customer challenge or opportunity. Having other experts on your bench can really be great. Getting to know them in person will cement the relationship and increase the chances they will answer your SOS calls and emails.

  1. Like minds are amazing. Like my author buddy and co-author Brian Meeks says, My friends only want to hear about the book business so much, but I can talk book business with my writer and author friends endlessly. Let’s face it, people, you’re a nerd for what you do. Your best bet is to find other nerds with whom you can chat for hours on end about the awesomeness that is your business.

  1. You might even make new friends. I think new friends are terrific, what about you?

Identify a conference you’ve attended in the past that was awesome, or a new one you would benefit from attending and get it on your calendar post-haste.
