Tired of writing great books, only to be discouraged by disappointing sales?

You put a lot of time, money, and so much more into writing and publishing your book.

Authors spend years writing books and throw their hands up in the air when they don’t sell well. Or sell at all.

It’s not your fault! The system is rigged in favor of the best marketers—all while the best books languish in obscurity.

However, if you don’t know how to “get eyes on it,” said another way: market it, the vision you have in your mind to sell books and get more business simply won’t happen.

Alternatively, you might want to write a book—I mean, you’ve been told: you must write a book!but have no concrete marketing plan to market it or market with it.

You might even be convinced: You can’t make money from a book.

So you look at the statistics (most books never sell more than 250 copies total in their lifetime) and realize the odds of you making back the money you’ve spent are desperately low.

(Or non-existent.)

Let’s call a spade a spade: you want to have a book, and you want it to make money.

The good news is effective book marketing can be learned!

And, you don’t just want a book to make money.

You want a book that helps people—really helps them. You want people to read your book because you know it can really help them either avoid pain or gain pleasure—or both! Yet if your book languishes in obscurity, it can’t help them, and it certainly won’t grow your business (or your bank account).

You know you need to “market your book” and “market with your book” but you have no idea how to effectively do either of those.

If you don’t sell any books, you won’t make an impact or a dime.

Writing the book will have been a waste of time and money. It will sell a handful of copies, then get put on your bookshelf and you’ll move on with your life.

That would be a bummer.

Your book should be making an impact and making you an income (maybe even multiple streams of income—but that’s a deeper conversation I have with students in the Building a Million Dollar Book Business Course)!

But if you don’t know how to market your book and market with your book, you’re going to miss out on that impact and the income.

Think of it this way: a book at rest is money at rest.

A book in motion is money in motion.

Marketing your book and marketing with your book means money will be in motion—in your direction! You will do well from doing good. Win-win-win.

I see so many people who make book marketing mistakes, and I don’t want you to make them, too. Allow me to explain.

HonoreeHeadshot

My name is Honorée Corder and in 2004, I published my first book Tall Order! Master Strategies to Organize Your Life and Double Your Success in Half the Time.

And I sold 11,000 copies of the book in just three weeks.

While the book was still being published.

I met Mark Victor Hansen—who you would know as the co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series (with Jack Canfield).

Mark gave great advice from the stage at a conference I was attending:

“Do seven things every day to market your book.”

He also said:

“Ask everyone you know to buy between 10 and 100 copies of your book.”

I’ve always thought it was wise to (a) take advice from experts, and (b) immediately put that advice into practice.

So, I got busy right away asking everyone I knew to buy between 10 and 100 copies of my book. I had immediate success, so I decided to think bigger. I asked everyone I knew to buy between 100 and 1000 copies of my book.

Immediately, one of my CEO coaching clients ordered 1,000 copies for his sales team, and a few days later another of my CEO coaching clients ordered 3,000 copies for an upcoming convention.

I had ordered 5,000 copies of my book thinking it might be years before I sold them all and they were 80% spoken for within the first week.

So, I kept calling and taking orders. I got two more orders for 1,000 books each, and another 150 or so total orders for much smaller orders . . .  you guessed it, between 10 and 100 books.

I placed two more orders for 5,000 books each, for a total of 15,000 books ordered and I sold just over 11,000 in three weeks.

I took a break from getting sales and got busy fulfilling those orders and thinking about other ways I could sell my books.

(Keep in mind this was 2004 . . . before Facebook, before Instagram, before [insert other social media platform of your choosing here].)

Here are just 2 ideas I came up with:

Example 1: Book Marketing through the Media: I pitched my book and expertise to a local television station, and I was booked to do a weekly three-minute segment on the MORE Show in Las Vegas. This spot lasted for almost two years.

While I don’t think media sells books, it certainly gives third-party credibility. And yes, I engaged a number of coaching and corporate training clients who were introduced to my book and commensurate services by seeing me on television.

I went on to write Vision to Reality, which has sold about 50,000 copies, and Business Dating, which has sold around 35,000.

Example 2: Book Marketing by Email: I started sending out an email “to my list.” This was really me using the bcc: function in my email for the first couple of years until I learned about email providers. Keep in mind this was the mid-2000s and I’m not exactly what you would call “tech savvy.”

I’d write daily on topics my clients struggled with: time management, business development, self-confidence, balancing work and family, setting boundaries . . . the list is endless.

When I released my first book, I mentioned it in emails to my current clients, and every so often, I’d mention it again in one of my emails to my list. Since POD (print on demand) was still to come, I was receiving orders on my fax machine, printing labels and receipts and invoices and going to the post office several times a week.

While almost two decades have passed and there are many great options for book marketing, providing solid content via email and selling books to subscribers still ranks as one of the most effective.

As of mid-2022, I’ve employed dozens of marketing ideas, which have resulted in the sale of over 4.4 million books, from which I have made several million dollars.

But let’s be honest. I’m lucky, right?

Ummm, no.

I had a mentor in my first business, and he used to say, “The harder you work, the luckier you get.”

I eventually changed this to, “The smarter I work, the luckier I get.”

Effective book marketing isn’t just about being lucky, effective book marketing is about being smart: strategic and creative, as well as relentlessly positive and consistent.

I’ve been interviewed at conferences and on hundreds of podcasts and everyone wants to know about book marketing. By popular demand and increasing request, I’ve created a comprehensive course to help you master book marketing and exceed your wildest dreams.
